What to drink for blind “beef” tasting?
Many wine lovers do blind tasting, we, as beef and wine lovers do blind tasting with beef.
In the "beef" world, it is all about preferences since there are no right or wrong answers for which beef is the best, it’s just a personal choice. Either the juicy Angus from the United States or the most sought after Wagyu from Japan. To enjoy the moment is all that matters.
I came up with an idea when my friends came along the other day, why not doing a blind “beef” tasting that inspired from a blind tasting? Since they all gathered different part of beef including the Chateaubriand, hanger steak, on the bone rib-eye, sirloin steak for eight people that usually drink Bordeaux most of the time. What wine to drink? I couldn’t help with burst of excitement and then had a wicked smile as that was my call for choosing wine of the night. Since there are so many parts of beef and it is all about mood, so I chose Uvas Felices Venta Las Vacas 2012 from Burgos in the Northern part of Spain.
You can tell the richness of the wine even when one is blindfolded. Solid texture, full bodied, rich and succulent dark fruits, with bright notes of oak, vanilla, cinnamon and hints of leather, it is a Ribera Del Duero style Tempranillo but never gets too sturdy. A balance of Yin and Yang, its silky texture goes perfectly with Chateaubriand or Hanger steak, there was a chef’s adage: “Salt loves meat and meat loves salt”, the same for Venta La Vacas and beef. This wine even had nice structure that can stood up with the beefy sirloin as well as the high marbling wagyu for cutting the greasiness and add extra dimension of smoky undertone to it. An Italian friend who love to pour a few drops of Balsamic vinegar to the meat will found the pleasing aroma of spices and balsamic in the wine that could be familiar to them.
Since it is a blind tasting, many guess it is from Rhone or Bordeaux, but no one thought it is from Ribera Del Duero because of its subtle smokiness and savory aromas, it has great precision of power and finesse. Just like you are meeting someone the first time but feels like an old friend and then drink together until dawn.
Once I revealed the label, everyone found it surprising to see the “Bull” on the label that just perfectly match with the theme of the night, we all admire the humorous and contemporary design from this Bodega; Spain, Bull. I’m thrilled! How could it be better than this?
