Since 1997, Tyrrell’s historical association with the “Rufus Stone” has been utilised for its top non Hunter red wines from vineyards in Heathcote (VIC) and McLaren Vale (SA). Situated just over 100kms north of Melbourne, Heathcote is undoubtedly Australia’s most exciting new red wine producing region. Its unique topography provides the most fertile climate and soil for shiraz vines to thrive, producing grapes which are commended for their ability to full ripen, yet retain excellent levels of natural acidity and fine grained tannins.

Grape Variety:

The fruit was machine harvested in the cool of the night, usually getting below 12°C. Fermentation took place at 25°C for seven days followed by five more days on skins to achieve optimum tannin balance.

The wine was then matured in predominately French oak barriques, of which 30% were new. About 40% of the blend underwent malolactic in barrel, which aids wood to wine integration.

Tasting Notes:

The wine has a dense, purple colour and bright hue. It shows a pretty, lifted aromatic profile of dark berries and some white pepper. The palate shows intense, sweet black plum flavours which are given a subtle lift from the French oak, both of which are connected by a fine tannin structure and a bright acidity.
