Established in 1985, Cloudy Bay Vineyards is situated in the Wairau Valley in Marlborough at the northern end of New Zealand’s South Island. This unique and cool wine region enjoys a maritime climate with the longest hours of sunshine of any place in New Zealand. Cloudy Bay has estate vineyards located at prime sites within the Wairau Valley, and long-term supply agreements with five Wairau Valley growers. The main varieties grown are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir with lesser quantities of Gewurztraminer, Riesling, and Pinot Gris.

The winery takes its name from the bay at the eastern extremity of the Wairau Valley, which was named Cloudy Bay by Captain Cook on his voyage to New Zealand in 1770.

Vinification:
Following harvest, the free-run juice was cold settled for 48-72 hours before racking. Fermentation was primarily carried out in stainless steel tanks with a mixture of cultured yeasts and wild yeast. Approximately 3% of the blend was fermented at warmer temperatures in old French oak barriques and large format vats. As usual our sauvignon blanc was stringently blended, including only the strongest batches.

Hints of cut grass and snow pea pods accent aromas of white grapefruit and passion fruit on the nose of Cloudy Bay's 2020 Sauvignon Blanc. The medium-bodied palate is round and generous at first, hinting at fig and nectarine, but it narrows to citrus and chalk on the silky-textured, mouthwatering finish. It's a solid, very drinkable effort, but such a historically important producer should be capable of more.

The 2022 Sauvignon Blanc has a zesty and vibrant nose, with notes of juicy citrus and makrut lime underpinned by subtle white nectarine and passionfruit notes. The palate is mouthwatering, with ripe vibrant passionfruit and citrus at the fore. These meld with tropical hints of peach and guava, gently balanced by stony saline notes.
