Rafael Palacios began his new wine project in Valdeorras in 2004, purchasing old Godello vineyards from old local growers. Godello is the indigenous white grape variety of the Valdeorras region. Rafael’s previous experience as a consultant in the region had motivated him to buy and restore old vineyards in the unique Bibei Valley, in the municipality of O Bolo. The very rigid topography and low fertility of the soil had led to the almost complete abandonment of the terraced vineyards in this tiny but historically important county, and the predominance of small plot vineyards was the result of inheritances drawn by lot, often out of a hat, called “Sorte” in Galician.
Country of Origin:
Produced from dry-farmed, small plots of old Godello vines (35- to 92-years-old), giving very low yields. The wine ferments in 500-liter French oak barrels where it’s aged for eight months on its lees. This is the benchmark for white Valdeorras grown on granite soils in the Bibei valley of the appellation.
Yellow, golden-colored, the aroma is subtle, citric, precise, elegant and sharp, with ripe yellow fruit, and lemongrass notes. The palate is full and very mineral, with a dense texture and flavors of ripe tangerine, some nuts, apples and a tropical touch, pungent and intense, with laser-like delineation.
