Buisson Renard

Limited Production

Didier Dagueneau was a legendary winemaker in Pouilly-Fumé (Loire), who was regarded as making ones of the greatest Sauvignon Blanc in the world. The New York Times described as: "His Sauvignon Blancs had an unexpected purity and clarity to them...his wines did not exalt the stature of the winemaker so much as the beauty of the terroir."

Inspired by the work of Edmond Vatan in Sancerre and Henri Jayer in Burgundy, Dagueuneau set up his domaine in 1982. He was one of the first growers in Loire to experiment with single-parcel wines and practice. His Sauvignon Blanc has always raised in barrels (20%-25% new oak) and typically spend 8-10months on lees.

Sadly, Dagueneau died at age 52 in a plane crash in 2008. His children, Louis-Benjamin, who had been working alongside his father, and Charlotte took over the domaine. In 2016, Louis-Benjamin was voted "Winemaker of the Year" by La Revue du Vin de France (France's serious wine magazine). The bottles now carry Louis-Benjamin's name.

Buisson Renard is a single parcel located mid-slope on the southwest side of Saint Andelain where the soil possesses the perfect balance of clay and flint.  The label seems interestingly related to it name. Buisson Renard means "fox bush" in English.

(Vinous' rating: 92 points)

The Buisson Renard tends to be a more supple, more aromatically restrained cuvee in the Dagueneau stable, and the 2019 is no different. It's probably the richer clay soils on this section of the domaine. There's a delicate savory, herbal and oak-derived nutty character. It is fine and fresh with a supple texture that holds the mouth like a gentle embrace. (Drinking window: now - 2032)
