Hospices de Beaune, a charitable institution, was founded in 1443 thanks to the patronage of Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor to the Duke of Burgundy, and his last wife Guigone de Salins. In 1457, Jean Guillotte le Verrier made the first donation of vines to the hospital, and this custom has still continued today.
The Domaine des Hospices de Beaune covers 60 hectares, A large majority of these vineyards (50 hectares) are planted with Pinot Noir and 10 hectares are planted with Chardonnay. 85% of them are classified as premiers crus and grands crus. All the wines are sold at the grand charity auction, famous the world over since 1859.
For many years now, the Domaine’s vineyards have been cultivated taking a sustainable, environmentally-friendly approach (no chemical inputs), and has conversed to organic farming since 2022.
