Immich-Batterieberg is one of the most historic estates in the Mosel. Founded and helmed by the Immich family since 1425 (until 1989), it was revived in 2009 by the talented winemaker Gernot Kollmann and his partners.
Ellergrub, the steepest and largest Enkirch site is about 200 meters upstream of the Batterieberg in the Starkenburger Fels. It features an abundance of ungrafted old vines over 80 years of age, which impart a unique intrinsic tension to the Riesling. Characterized by the finely eroded, dark ("blue") slate, this terroir produces some of the cleanest, purest, and crispest expressions of Riesling.
Kollmann specializes in dry and off-dry Rieslings crafted with minimal intervention. By eschewing chaptalization, concentration, de-acidification, and chemical fining agents—with only minimal sulfur added at bottling—he produces wines that are structurally precise, vibrantly alive, and perfectly balanced.

From ancient, partly ungrafted vines, the 2020 Enkircher Ellergrub Riesling is white-golden in color and opens with a clear, fine and very complex as well as delicate bouquet of ripe fruit and finely weathered blue slate notes. This is amazingly fine again but also generously ripe, yet everything seems to be so easily interwoven. this is a full-bodied, round and elegant Riesling that, again, didn't ferment to fully dry, which gives slightly sweet (or round) fruit but also lush, mouth-filling and silky-textured fruit with remarkable finesse. The finish is long and harmonious, very elegant and sublime. Many Riesling lovers will adore this wine immediately, yet I'd opt to cellar it for about a decade. In any case, you can expect to enjoy a great Mosel Riesling when it's Immich's 2020 Ellergrub.
