One of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's benchmark estates, Clos des Papes has been nurtured across generations by the Avril family and is today helmed by Vincent Avril. The domaine spans 32 hectares across prime terroirs, including the famed La Crau plateau, with a diverse mix of rolled pebbles, sand and clay, planted largely to 50-80-year-old vines.
Guided by a traditional, purist philosophy, Avril crafts just one red and one white cuvée, believing true complexity comes from the natural harmony of diverse terroirs and heritage varieties. The red is centred on Grenache, supported by Mourvèdre, Syrah and other traditional grapes, aged without new oak and bottled unfiltered. The white blends several local varieties to preserve freshness, minerality and tension. Renowned for their finesse, balance and depth, Clos des Papes wines remain enduring benchmarks of elegance in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Tasted recently and as remarkable as ever, the 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Clos des Papes, derived from a Mediterranean summer without excess or hydric stress, wafts from the glass with superb aromas of dark berries, violet, lilac, dark cherries and crushed flowers. Full-bodied, seamless and layered, it has a fleshy, enveloping core of fruit framed by velvety, filigreed tannins, concluding with a long, ethereal finish. A deeply identity-driven Clos des Papes of remarkable overall precision, it stands as one of the summits of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in this vintage.

Lots of kirsch and cherry with orange peel aromas that follow through to a medium-bodied wine with plenty of fruit, intensity and a fresh, clean finish. Licorice at the finish. Shows the warmth of the vintage. Caressing. Drink or hold.
