Immich-Batterieberg is one of the most historic estates in the Mosel. Founded and helmed by the Immich family since 1425 (until 1989), it was revived in 2009 by the talented winemaker Gernot Kollmann and his partners.
Batterieberg is the estate’s monopole, carved into stone by the Immich family in the 1840s using explosives to create a series of dramatic terraced vineyards. In the 1868 Prussian classification, it was awarded the highest rank—a status equivalent to a Grand Cru today. It nurtures 80 to 100+ year-old ungrafted vines. Its unique blend of grey slate and quartzite soils yields a tightly knit Riesling with a signature, electric minerality.
Kollmann crafts outstanding dry and off-dry Rieslings with minimal intervention—no sugar, concentration, de-acidification, or chemical fining, only a touch of sulfur before bottling. The wines are precise, vibrant, and show impressive aging potential.

The radiant golden-yellow 2020 Enkircher Batterieberg Riesling comes from 80-year-old, ungrafted vines on gray slate and quartzite soils in the steep terraces of the Starkenburg slope and opens with a highly delicate yet also very deep and stony bouquet with perfectly concentrated ripe fruit aromas and notes of crushed stones and wild herbs. This is fascinatingly complex again, and at this early stage, it also has very fine gunpowder notes. Pure, fresh and intense on the palate, this is a dense, lush and firmly structured Batterieberg with a touch of sweetness on the finish. This is a still-nervous but tensile and very promising wine that should be cellared for a year or three, if you like to enjoy a wide, relaxed and balanced grand cru. (Issued in Dec 2021)
